On March 15th, 2013,the African Student Association (ASA) at IAU celebrated its first ever African Night at People’s Restaurant in Vieux Fort. It began with a lunch seminar presentation on the independence of Ghana in the afternoon, followed by an evening that appreciated the rich culture of Africa. A pot-luck style dinner was served as students prepared delectable dishes ranging from “Egusi soup and 3ba” to rice and peanut butter soup, each showcasing the representative countries of the students; including Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Benin. Students also donned traditional African attire and strutted down a runway in fashion show style that ignited the evening’s program, followed by the highlight of the night; a very candid comedy skit which shed some light into the African culture and pointed out “African-isms.” African Night concluded with a tutorial on African dance styles and got everyone on their feet and the dancing continued into the night.
