As someone once said, ‘If you are a blood donor, you are a hero to someone, somewhere, who received your gracious gift of life’
We all have too much to offer in life. It’s entirely up to us to choose whether to or not to give our precious resource for which we need no extra strength to save a life; ‘Our Blood’. Every year on June 14th, the world observes Blood Donor day. This year also, like in the years before, IAU was proud to host the blood donation event, hand in hand with St. Jude blood bank services and the Victoria Hospital blood bank services on Thursday, June 14th 2018 honoring the World Blood Donor Day.
The theme of the event was to ‘Be there for someone else; Give blood, Share life.’
The call for the drive was made by District Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Shana Cyr-Philbert. The drive was made a success by the masses, which came from different communities in the south of the Island and gave their blood to support the cause.
In her address to the gathering, Dr. Philbert said, “I want to encourage those of us who can donate blood, to donate today and make it a habit.”
She even recounted events that made her feel that people in St. Lucia are fortunate enough to have blood donation campaigns and services that gives people access to safe blood. She also said that supply of sufficient blood to save a life when in need should be our priority.
Roger Winter, a councilor for the South Constituency Council, Vieux Fort said “When you give blood, you donate a gift of life.” He also said that IAU’s efforts in the cause are commendable as the college has been observing such occasions with passion for the past 10 years.
In an interview with the St. Lucia News Online, IAU Public Relations Officer Mr. Sibi Gopalakrishnan strongly suggested that IAU will continue to observe and honor this public service of blood donation and would treasure every effort of public participation in years to come.
A drop our blood is a drop of life that we can share. Circulate Blood, Circulate Life!
