Many qualified applicants are rejected from U.S. and Canadian medical schools mainly because there are a limited number of seats. Only one in four are actually admitted from almost 200,000 applicants. Furthermore, many students do not realize that approximately 25% of U.S. medical residents did not graduate from U.S. medical schools. These facts supply the educational impetus of International American University College of Medicine, founded in 2004, which exists to help those qualified applicants achieve their dream of becoming a practicing physician.
A Progressive Curriculum. We teach in a problem-based, case-based manner, allowing students to take a more active role in the learning process.
U.S. University Agreement. Students can do their pre-medical coursework in as little as two years at our associated university, Texas A&M-Commerce, which is located about one hour from Dallas.
Low Student/Faculty Ratio. We maintain a student to faculty ratio that is lower than other medical schools. You will never be just another social security number at IAU.
Patient Exposure Early On. During the first semester our students start seeing patients at local clinics. In their third and fourth semesters, students are exposed to patients at our affiliated hospital in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, St. Jude Hospital.
Shelf Exams. These exams, given at the end of each course in the basic sciences, help prepare our students for Step 1 of the USMLE.
Fifth Semester in the U.S. This reduces the amount of time at our St. Lucia campus and helps initiate the student to clinical medicine that is central to the U.S. system.
USMLE Board Review. Integrated into the curriculum, this review ensures that our students are well-prepared for Step 1 of the USMLE.
You have many options in choosing a Caribbean medical school. We, as educators, want you to make a sound decision. If you do decide that IAU can help you realize your goals, then apply and know that we will supply you with a superb path towards becoming a U.S. or Canadian physician.
